Day1
Arrive Paro by air and transfer to Thimphu
On arrival, you will be met by our representative and
drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. En-route,
you’ll stop at Chuzom, the confluence of the Thimphu
and Paro rivers, the “mother and father” rivers of the
state. In Thimphu we’ll check into our hotel. Afternoon
we’ll visit the King’s Memorial Chorten continuously
surrounded by people reciting mantras and spinning
prayer wheels. From here we’ll continue to Buddha
Point (Kuensel Phodrang) and take in the largest
statue of Buddha in the country and the spectacular
views. We’ll end the day with a stroll through Thimphu
and overnight here. (L, D)
Day 2
Thimphu
After breakfast we’ll visit the National Library, which
holds a vast collection of ancient Buddhist texts and
manuscripts, and the Institute for Zorig Chusum.
From here we’ll move to the Textile Museum and
explore its collection antique Bhutanese artifacts.
Simply Bhutan is our next stop. It is a living museum
and studio encapsulating the cultural heritage of the
Bhutanese people. After lunch, we’ll travel to Pangri
Zampa, a 16th-century monastery, a monastic
school where students learn Lamaism and astrology
based on Buddhist philosophy. Our last stop of the
day is Trashichhoedzong, an impressive fortress/
monastery that houses the Secretariat and the throne
room of the King. Tonight we’ll sleep in Thimphu. (B, L, D)
Day 3
Thimphu • Gangtey
After breakfast, we’ll drive to Gangtey via the
Dochula Pass (Altitude 3080m). On a clear day, the
area offers spectacular views over the high peaks
of the eastern Himalayas. On arrival in Gangtey,
we’ll settle into the hotel and enjoy an evening stroll
through the village. (B, L, D)
Day 4
Gangtey
This morning we’ll visit Gangtey Goempa. Perched
on a small hill, this is the largest Nyingmapa
monastery in Bhutan. Spread out before us is the
stunning Phobjikha valley. The Black-Necked
Crane Information Centre, equipped with high-power
spotting scopes, offers information that outlines the
natural and cultural history of the area. Tonight, we’ll
stay in Gangtey. (B, L, D)
Day 5
Gangtey • Punakha
This morning we’ll share breakfast and drive to
Punakha, the old capital of Bhutan. Upon our arrival
in Punakha, we’ll check in and visit Punakha Dzong
,
Bhutan’s capital until 1955.This morning we’ll hike
through paddy fields and villages, about (about a 1½
hour walk) to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of fertility,
sacred to those hoping to conceive. We’ll overnight
in Punakha (B, L, D)
Day 6
Punakha
After breakfast, we’ll spend the day at the
Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery
and Temple Complex. The temple complex houses
a permanent meditation centre for nuns, a school
for traditional arts and boasts a wonderful collection
of Buddhist sculpture. The evening is yours to
explore; We’ll spend the night in Punakha. (B, L, D)
Day 7
Punakha • Paro
After breakfast, drive to Paro and visit Simtokha
Dzong, the oldest fortress of the country (1627)
now housing a school for Buddhist studies. In
Paro, we’ll check in, have lunch and head to Ta
Dzong, the National Museum. From here, a short
walk will bring you to Rinpung Dzong (ParoDzong),
(“Fortress of the Heap of Jewels”), which has a
long and fascinating history. Tonight we’ll sleep in
Paro. (B, L, D)
Day 8
Paro
After breakfast we’ll set out on foot for Taktshang
Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), a round trip of five hours.
One of Bhutan’s most famous monasteries, perched
above the Paro Valley. Severely damaged by fire in
1998, this Bhutanese jewel has been restored to
its original splendour. In the afternoon we’ll drive to
Drukgyel Dzong, a ruined fortress built to defend
against Tibetan invaders centuries ago and in the
evening, visit the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang,
one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by
Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo. This temple marks
the introduction of Buddhism into Bhutan. Again, we’ll
sleep in Paro. (B, L, D)
Day 9
Depart Paro
After an early breakfast at the hotel, we’ll get you to
the airport for your flight and our representative will
bid you a fond farewell. (B)
